Authorized by Congress in 2010, it took seven years for the United States Mint to introduce the American Eagle One Ounce Palladium Bullion Coin in 2017 - the first major change to the American Eagle bullion coin program since 1997! The first year coin was met with massive demand, selling out quickly. The following year brought about the first-ever Palladium Proof coin, selling out from the Mint in just five minutes - this is the first time a proof finish was ever debuted on a palladium piece. Each year following the initial debut in 2017 brought a new Palladium Eagle: a reverse proof in 2019 and a burnished piece in 2020.
2021 brings another gorgeous proof coin to the series, struck in 99.95% pure palladium. The obverse design features a high-relief likeness of “Winged Liberty” from the “Mercury Dime” obverse by famed American coin designer and medallic artist Adolph A. Weinman. The reverse design features a high-relief version of Weinman’s 1907 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Gold Medal reverse, which includes an eagle and a branch. In developing the coin, the United States Mint was able to use the original reverse plaster of the AIA gold medal.
