American Buffalo Coins
The American Gold Buffalo was introduced by the United States Mint on June 22, 2006 as the first ever U.S. 24 karat gold bullion coin. Production was authorized under Public Law 109-145, dated December 22, 2005, and one ounce coins have been made every year since. The coin has a legal tender face value of $50.
The Gold Buffalo coins feature the design of the famous 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel created by James Earle Fraser. The historic design, a favorite of collectors, was issued from 1913 to 1938. The obverse design features an American Indian and the reverse features an American Buffalo (bison) standing on a raised mound, as well as inscriptions of the denomination, weight, and gold content of the coin. Perfect MS-70 1oz Gold coins have been minted since 2006, however in 2008 fractional denominations were released only for that year.
